How it Works
From 1 July 2025, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program extends the SRES to include battery systems, offering an upfront discount of around 30% on the cost of installing eligible small-scale batteries (5 – 100 kWh) connected to a solar PV system.
The discount, funded by the government’s purchase of small-scale technology certificates, is based on the usable capacity of the battery and will gradually decrease through to 2030, ensuring no extra costs are passed on to homeowners.
Proposed Eligibility and Requirements
- Capacity: Nominal 5 kWh – 100 kWh (STCs claimable for the first 50 kWh of usable capacity).
- Installation: Must be performed by Solar Accreditation Australia–accredited installers, with a certificate of electrical compliance issued on or after 1 July 2025.
- Product Approval: Batteries and inverters must appear on the Clean Energy Council’s approved product lists.
- Pairing with Solar: Installed alongside new or existing rooftop solar PV systems (under 100 kW).
One Rebate per Premises: Only the first battery system installed, added to, or replaced at a premises is eligible.
