Requirements for Builders
To the builders we work with, we would like to outline our timing and requirements for new builds.
Timing
We allow 1-2 consecutive days to complete first fix, depending on the job complexity and same for second fix. We need to complete the first fix once the roof is on, exterior walls are completed, generally the same time as the first fix electrical. We will require 3 weeks notice to book in the first fix, failing to do this may result in no prewire and surface mounted conduits. For second fix we require all switch boards to be energised and ready for completion (please see document “Solar Battery Design 2026” for switch board and backup requirements), inverter/battery locations must be fully completed, painted etc. We require 3 weeks notice for this stage also.
Access
If the job is multi story with no reasonable access with a 6-7m scissor lift, we will need to install panels at the same time as the first fix whilst the onsite scaffold is at roof height to act as an appropriate edge protection. We understand that bottom story roofs might not be completed until scaffolds are removed. We would still like to get in whilst scaffolds are installed at the highest level to ensure safety. All skylights, vents and roof flashings must be completed.
Locations
Not all inverters and batteries are IP rated, so we suggest a sensible undercover area e.g., carports, garages or veranda’s, avoiding habitable areas and ideally eastern or southern walls if outside. Batteries have strict restrictions with location and clearances to other appliances, certain doorways and windows. Battery guidelines can be found in AS:5139. Single stud walls are not appropriate walls to install equipment; it is not compliant to install unprotected cables (including sub boards and sub mains) on these types of walls due to clearances. Clad walls are best to have double or 150mm studs.
Considerations
Coring through concrete flooring will need to allow for solar conduits and cables. If Parking and access is difficult, please coordinate to have minimal trades on site as we often have multiple utes and trailers all needing access.
